Jacana is a small suburb in the City of Hume, about 14 km north of the CBD: 1.2 square kilometres and about 900 homes. It lies east of Moonee Ponds Creek and south of Johnstone Street, with the Western Ring Road on its southern edge. It was built as a Housing Commission of Victoria estate. Most houses date from 1958 and 1959, all in solid or veneer brick, and the northern streets followed in the early 1970s as the southern end of the Meadow Fair estate. Several streets are named after competitors at the 1956 Olympic Games.

Clearing out before you leave

Hume City Council asks you to book a hard waste collection at least two weeks before you move, or earlier if you’re moving in December or January. Anything left behind after you move out is treated as dumped rubbish and may be fined. Leave your bins and kitchen caddy behind, because they stay with the property. If they have rubbish in them, put them out for collection on moving day.

Moving into a Hume home

Check that the property has a small garbage bin, a large recycling bin, a food and garden bin and a kitchen caddy. To have waste vouchers allocated, renters send Hume a copy of their rental agreement, and owners send a certificate of occupancy or a rates notice. One thing to watch: next-door Glenroy is in the City of Merri-bek, not Hume. Even Jacana station, on Pascoe Vale Road, is in Glenroy. Bin and hard waste rules follow the council, so if your move crosses that line, check with both councils.
